The 30-Day Shred: Day 15

“I ran three miles, staggered into the lobby, and took the elevator back to my apartment. No point to overdoing this exercise junk.” –Stephanie Plum
Janet Evanovich, Two for the Dough

You guys. Seriously. I’m not young anymore.

PIN IT, y’all!

The Shred

A few years ago, I completed The 30-Day Shred with Jillian Michaels. At the time, I was young. It did the trick, and the weight fell off.

Then, I had this. The King of (Ring) Pop(s).

cropped-dsc_1298-edited.jpg

Clearly, he wasn’t that size when he came out (*wince*). He’s become that size in the last few years (*sniff*). Anywho, by the time he hit two, I figured it was time to take what I’m referring to as ‘the baby weight’ off. So, I fired up The 30-Day Exercise Challenge on Facebook, and over 800 of my closest and dearest girlfriends from around the globe joined me, as my second trip through Shredville began.

Granted, not everyone is Shredding, but to each her own. Some are walking. Some are T-Tapping. Some are PiYo-ing. Bottom line: they’re doing something besides sitting on the couch watching Rocky marathons on AMC (my specialty). Last Friday marked Day 15 of The 30-Day Exercise Challenge and, in particular for me, The 30-Day Shred.

The 30-Day Shred consists of three levels at 10 days each. Each workout is less than half-an-hour long. I add at least a half-hour of cardio (read: swim with my children) most days. I’m halfway through level 2. I’m begging Jesus to make a quick return before level 3 begins. My shoulders would like to spend exactly zero more minutes in the plank position.

Here are my stats at the halfway point:

Neck: lost 1 inch (tips about managing newfound turkey neck appreciated)
Bust: lost 2 inches (of course…and down one cup size)
Waist: lost 2 inches
Belly: lost 2.5 inches
Hips: lost 1 inch
Arms: lost 2.25 inches for both
Legs: lost 1.5 inches for both

For those of you that don’t have A Beautiful Mind (me, either, but I’ve got a calculator), that’s a total of 12.25 inches in 15 days with The Heifer Otherwise Known as Jillian.

Oh, and I lost 6.4 pounds, too. Say what you want about her, but it works!

My 14-year-old daughter, she who really didn’t need to lose anything, has been Shredding with me (bless her heart!) and lost a total of 8.5 inches and 1.4 pounds, too! #proudmama

More toned. More flexible. More cardio stamina. More sweaty. More stinky. More laundry. More showering. More, more, more. But less hungry! All that exercise makes me somewhat more careful about what I eat.

I try to stick around 400 calories per meal (x3) plus a 200-calorie afternoon snack, but I’m not a stickler about this. Being a stickler makes my perfectionism act up, driving me to perfect overeating again. I also try to eat relatively low-carb and overall healthy foods. I suspect that, as I go, I’ll have to get better about this. And maybe back off the Chick-fil-A fried chicken sandwiches a bit. But, hey, as long as I can lose an average of 2 pounds per week and still have the occasional chicken sandwich, ain’t no shame in that game.

Here’s my Day 15 pictorial update. More pics forthcoming on Day 30, of course.

Day 1 to 15 before and after collage

If you can’t see a difference, besides the fact that I managed to paint my toenails in 15 days, please don’t tell me.  I’m anxious to complete this challenge and move on to the next one, so I can have some more obvious before-and-after pictures, which WILL be forthcoming on Day 30. Over.

SPEAKING OF THE NEXT CHALLENGE…

The next 30-Day Exercise Challenge is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 15! Y’all need to get in on this, even if you aren’t tracking with the particular exercise type that we’re doing. If you’ve joined the current challenge late, this will be the perfect time to be on Day 1 with us! Many, many are being motivated, supported and encouraged in whatever exercise they’ve chosen.

51AFniCXtYL__SL500_AA300_

The new challenge is Jillian Michaels’ Ripped in 30! This DVD is similar in style to The 30-Day Shred but contains FOUR workouts instead of three! If memory serves me correctly (and we all know that’s sketchy), level 1 of Ripped is worse, way worse, than level 3 of The Shred (even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus). I will be doing each workout for two weeks, meaning this particular challenge will last a total of eight weeks, ending on/around Friday, November 7, 2014. And y’all KNOW I’m already researching a plan for after that! Lord knows I’m gonna need to workout when the holidays (and their cookies and such!) roll around! Dang cookies.

Don’t worry about specifics for now, just make sure you have the DVD and your trusty hand weights. A sweat rag will be good, too. I’ll be posting printable calendars and weight/measurement sheets for y’all soon!

I call this one The-DVD-I-Never-Finished-Because-Morning-Sickness. Whereas, The 30-Day Shred the past few weeks was about getting moving, this one’s gonna be about redemption. I did level 1 of Ripped after I finished The Shred years ago. I remember going into it a little cocky after having killed level 3 of The Shred and, immediately, being humbled. It. Will. Not. Break. Me.

If you’ve been doing the legwork to prepare for The 30-Day Shred, here’s the link to buy it. You can start it on Day 1 with us and track right along with us at your own pace.

If you’re still preparing to even deal with The 30-Day Shred, Jillian’s come out with a new, Beginner Shred DVD. It’s on pre-sale at Amazon now in time for a September 2 release date. You can get it here.

NOW FOR THE GOOD STUFF!

Y’all. The sweat is becoming an issue. For reals. First, it starts as a little beading, then, the next thing I know, I’m wiping it out of my cleavage. I promise it comes out of my ears sometimes. It’s a thing.

For this reason, I knew, the moment I saw these beauties, that they were the one for me!

And now, I want TWO of you to have one of these for sweat-soaking purposes, so I’m giving them away! In order to enter, just leave a comment on this post telling what has been the most encouraging part of being in The 30-Day Exercise Challenge group, or, if you’re not in the group yet, how the encouragement of the group will help motivate you to meet your exercise goals. Then, get in the group, man. Not man. Lady. Ladies only, dude.

Rules, lady:
To enter, you MUST leave a comment answering one of the above questions ON THIS POST (not on the Facebook page)!
Enter only once, please.
Comments will close for winning purposes on Friday, August 29, 2014, sometime around dinnertime.
Winners will get to choose size and style of Bolder Band.
And this: I LOVE Y’ALL!

MY FAVORITE!!!

Some of the ladies from The 30-Day Exercise Challenge have volunteered to guest post here on AinW. I’m pretty sure it’s because of their great love for me, but whatever. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be sharing their posts with you! If they don’t inspire you, God help you.

Up first: Toni, from Auckland, New Zealand. We call her John the Baptist. She’s our Forerunner.

  1. I have never been so proud of myself (okay… maybe not NEVER) doing the 30DS. After day 1 I thought my body would never be capable doing what it’s doing now. I feel stronger and I feel better! I’ve stuck with it, and I enjoy it! I never would have stuck with it (and this time I do mean NEVER) if it weren’t for you fabulous ladies of the group. I’m so loving the fellowship and encouragement and commiserating!! Thanks, Heather for bring us all together.

  2. Lookin’ good, mama! Woohoo! That’s great progress.

So excited about the giveaway, so here’s my comment:
The most encouraging part(s) of doing the thirty day shred is knowing I’m not doing it alone. It really encourages me to keep going. I haven’t exercised this consistently in six years! Woohoo! The other thing that encourages me is the comic relief all of you lovely ladies provide on a daily basis! 🙂 thanks for starting this challenge…so happy to be a part of it!

  4. I wish I had known about this at the beginning! I am impressed that you breezed Level 3 of the 30 Day Shred! I can do Level 1 and am so-so on Level 2, but Level 3 has always been a no-go for me. So hopefully, with the encouragement of this group. I can get past that obstacle.

Your results in 15 days are AMAZING! Way to go!

  5. Heather – I want to first point out that I love you, man! You’re hilarious and I’m so thankful for your willingness to sort of be our leader for our challenges. I’ve lost a total of 9 something inches since beginning the 30DS. I don’t love it, that’s for sure. But my clothes getting looser and feeling better about myself are huge motivators. And I LOVE the accountability and support from the FB group.

I’m not going to say I’m excited for the next challenge but I will say that I’ll be there with ya, cleavage sweat and all!

  6. I got through the first week of the challenge and then proceeded to fracture my elbow :/ I was encouraged during that first week by all of the posts on FB. It helped me realize I was not the only one struggling. As soon as my elbow heals and I get the go ahead I will join back in.

  8. I have very much loved the encouragement and accountability through this group! It’s been such a blessing, I love working out and this has been what has gotten me back in the game after a four month hiatus. As I type this I am sweaty from the workout and excited that after I get cleaned up, I will be putting on some jeans that I couldn’t fit into 15 days ago. 🙂

  9. I started with “Ripped in 30”! No wonder I gave up! “Beginner Shred,” here I come! Until then, the group can just be my encouragement to be doing anything I find on the internet that gets me moving! Thanks!

  10. Congrats on your progress! I missed out on the current challenge, but I may have to jump in with the next one! I have done the Shred before, and I agree, for level 2 Jillian might as well come in at the beginning and say, “Get into the plank position. Now stay there for the next 25 minutes.” Then cue J’s evil laugh “Bwah! Ha! Ha!”

I have the Ripped in 30 dvd, but never finished it due to a wrist injury (sprain) that happened while I was working through it. Wish I could say it was something glamorous, like rock climbing, but I very UN-glamorously slipped and fell in a restaurant. If my wrist can handle all the plank (GRRRRR) and similar moves I would LOVE to join in with ya’ll. I need a healthy dose of peer pressure to help me get on board.

  11. The most encouraging thing about this challenge has been the real women that are going through it right along with me! I honestly haven’t worked out in ten years and didn’t even know how to start. Heather has made me laugh and want to share my funny work out escapades daily. Even though I started by doing the t Tapp and just started the 30DS as my second level, this is way more than I was doing six months ago when I was sitting on my couch feeling sorry for myself and sharing Reese’s pieces with my dogs. Thank you Ladies!!!!!

  14. Love this challenge. Even though I am not doing the Shred, I have been working out 5-6 days a week at the Y. Once I am done sweating like the oldie I am it is nice to see gals who are struggling with the same things, it encourages me to keep going and know I am not alone.

  15. Before this challenge began, I had spent the previous weeks feeling horrible about myself. I felt fat, unattractive, and unhappy with myself. See, I had reached my heaviest weight ever. I had tried several different exercise programs in the past, but never finished them. I was scrolling through Facebook one day when the THM page popped up on my newsfeed. I started following it out of curiosity. A few days after I started following the THM page, Heather posted about starting an exercise page. It was like God had brought it straight to me. I knew I had to make a change. So, I joined the group. I told my husband and he basically laughed it off and said I’d never actually complete the 30DS based on my past exercise history. Well because of the ladies in this group being honest and real, I’m proud to report that I have completed 22/30 days! I have not taken the weekends off , because I was scared that if I did I wouldn’t start back. I couldn’t stand the thought of telling all you ladies that I had skipped a day. Each of you ladies have provided me with an accountability that I’ve never had before. Y’all have encouraged me by being honest about who you are and where you are and what you are struggling with each day. Every morning when I want to sleep in I tell myself if all those ladies can do it with everything they have going on then I can too. I will forever be grateful for that! My self confidence is back and I feel strong and beautiful again thanks to all you ladies! My husband tells me he is proud of me every single day, which is invaluable to me. So ladies, thank you for being the voice inside my head telling me that I can do it! I can’t wait to continue on this challenge with each of you, and I look forward to reading your posts daily and reporting in on my own progress. Y’all are awesome!

Btw, your results are much more amazing then mine!

  23. The most encouraging part of being in this 30 day exercise challenge is the accountability. If I don’t feel like getting off of my booty, I’ll look at the page and see all the other ladies putting in some work, which makes me feel like I should as well! Also I feel extremely guilty if I don’t work out. This group just makes me want to put my best efforts in! Love it!

  24. I agree with everyone that this group is all that and a bag of baked chips! Heather, you have kept us focused and encouraged every step of the way. I am so happy to be a part of this group, women from all over the world, with a common goal. The support here is more real than I found when I joined classes a few years ago. Those people were in the same room with me twice a week and barely said a word to each other. They came in, did the class and left. On here, people check in when up, down or sideways and have the full support of a wonderful group. Thank you Heather for seeing a need and finding a way to fill it.

  30. I’ve been doing THM for almost 2 yrs. and no longer have any weight to lose. However, I do want to be “ripped” and dominate the local 5ks. I keep asking myself why? Then I see you ladies doing it and I think, well, then so can I! So far I’ve become more “cut” than I ever thought possible. I started this journey because I’ve had a hard time in my personal and I just wanted to feel better about myself, but now I’m starting to feel bad*ss! And I’m finally seeing results on my “thunder thighs” I had lost hope on years ago! Thanks ladies!

  32. I’ve been loving being in this group as it’s gotten me back on the exercise wagon again, huffing and puffing along behind all you crazy women doing the Shred. The constant check-ins and the fun sense of humor that you all have about it helps so much. I even think I might actually try the Shred itself next time around (or maybe the new beginner one… ). Yikes! Thanks, Heather!

  35. The most encouraging part of this challenge has been reading about other women’s daily struggles to exercise…The honesty! And then seeing that they are doing it. It has gotten me off my butt more than once! And also seeing that a lot of women are not getting instant results, but willing to keep at it. If I have to read one more story about someone’s pants falling down cause they’ve lost so much weight, I’m gonna puke! Lol. And especially your humor Heather:)

I believe the encouragement and accountability held in such a group will motivate me to continue even when it gets hard or I feel like there is too much life and not enough time! I am sure glad there are people out there willing to coordinate a group where people work together for the good of each other and leave judgements at the door!

All the jokes keep me in a happy place and that helps me to stay away from junk. I am not eating because I am in a down mood. I seriously love the laughter from all the women.
